What are Constellations
You may have heard of Family Constellations, but here we are talking about something different. In the context of our program, Constellations refer to a method applicable beyond family therapy, particularly in coaching.
A Constellation is a system of interconnected elements in relation to each other. This concept can be applied to workgroups, relationships, organizations, the key elements of a project, the choices for a decision, or the parts of our inner world.
Constellations as a Language
Constellations are a versatile “language” that can be used in multiple contexts. Just like English, which can be used to write poetry, narrative, science, or history, Constellations are a basic common language that is then integrated with technical jargon and specific skills, depending on the area of application.
At the Academy of Constellations, we teach this basic language and the skills necessary to apply Constellations in coaching.
Brief History of Constellations
Constellations are a relatively recent methodology that emerged in the 1990s. Here are the main milestones in their evolution:
- Bert Hellinger created Family Constellations, focusing on family systems and harmonizing relationships with ancestors.
- Gunthard Weber introduced Organizational Constellations, applying them to business roles and aspects.
- Insa Sparrer and Matthias Varga von Kibéd developed Structural Constellations, extending the use to various systems, both external (projects, enterprises) and internal (values, resources).
Subsequently, other applications emerged, such as Business Constellations, Work Constellations, Shamanic Constellations, and many others.
Applications of Constellations in Coaching
Constellations in Coaching are not limited to specific contexts like organizations, business, management, or work. They can be used for any theme in both Business and Life Coaching, offering a pragmatic and concrete approach with clear boundaries between this type of work and applications in family therapy.
Constellations are a methodology that helps clients – individually, in teams, or groups – gain greater awareness of their current situation, fostering inner alignment and opening the way for change.
When using Constellations in a coaching session, we propose to the client an experiential exercise. We create a spatial representation of the key elements of the client’s issue. In individual coaching, we use objects on a table or spaceholders on the floor. In group or team coaching, we can use the people present.
This representation allows the client to explore each element, not only through cognitive reflections but also through the embodyment, connecting to emotions and physical sensations.
Regardless of the topic, Constellations are effective in developing Self-Leadership, enhancing self-awareness, and promoting greater harmony both internally and externally.
How They Work in Individual Coaching
The Constellation process in individual coaching is divided into four main phases:
- Identification of Key Elements: A conversation between coach and client to identify the key elements of the client’s situation.
- Mapping the Situation: The client creates a spatial representation of these elements. The coach guides the exploration of each element to enhance awareness.
- Modifying the System: The client and coach work together to improve the harmony of the system, making it function better.
- Integration and Actions: The coach supports the client in integrating the learnings and identifying the next steps.
